Mercedes-Benz 230 E

The Mercedes-Benz 230 E was in production since 1976, in 1981 a new 4 cylinder engine with codename M102 was introduced. The new 2 litre four cylinder with shorter stroke replaced the old M115, a fuel-injected 2.3 litre version of this engine (in 230E/TE/CE) the old carburetted 230. Both engines were more powerful than their predecessors. Some advantages of a 4 cylinder engine compared to a 6 cylinder engine, are less thermodynamic losses and better gas quality, better torque at low speeds, less friction, and a much lower weight. The 230 E was provided with a KA mechanical petrol injection, with an unusually long intake manifold.

Performance: Acceleration and top speed of this car were very good. With a top speed more than 180 km / h, and it accelerates from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in 10.3 seconds. Also, the Mercedes E 230 is very quiet. In idle it produces only 46 dB (A), at 80 km / h 67 dB (A) and at 100 km / h it shall not exceed 70 dB (A). Only over 140 km / h, the limit of 80 dB (A) reaches, and at top speed only 82 dB measured. Fuel economy is 9.6 kilometers on one liter. Gearbox: The gearbox is easy to operate, the switch positions are clearly defined and especially findable, the synchronization goes smoothly.

Brakes: round disc brakes are fitted, in the rear is a separate drum for the parking brake and a warning light indicates when the brake-lining is worn. The handling of the 230 E was like you may expect from a Mercedes-Benz. The car follows willingly every road he gets imposed to, and hardly reacts road roughness. The car tends to under-steer slightly, but on a wet road surface the rear can also show some outbreak. This for a Mercedes inappropriate driving style never leads to unexpected reactions.

The shock absorbers are from excellent quality, which weigh about properly restrained either. The excellent shock absorbers, a sophisticated suspension and a generous weight and very thoughtful seats make this car a very comfortable. At Daimler-Benz, they are not scarce with accessories for their outstanding cars. There is a laminated windscreen and the headlights with halogen lamps, large and low beam. Unfortunately the standard factory model came without power steering, and was only available as option. A total of 442,000 are built from the 230E.
